The Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Jim Ovia, has announced the donation of 3,500 tablets in aid of over 1,000 indigent students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in support of their online learning endeavours. He announced the donation during the grand-finale at the ongoing 2021 51st convocation of the institution where a total of 148 bagged Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and honorary degrees conferred on a number of eminent Nigerians. The prompt donation and kind gesture made by Ovia was in response to the pleas made by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe for the support of over 1000 indigent students at the University. Earlier, the VC had in his welcome address, appealed for support from friends and well-wishers of the university for the institution and students in the area of infrastructures and learning facilities. In the same vein, Sir (Dr) Kensington Adebukunola Adebutu, who was conferred with Honorary Doctorate Degree, announced the donation of N200 million for the provision of effective internet facilities at the university. Dr. Adebutu explained that the gesture was in response to a discussion he had with the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, Senator Lanre Tejuoso, less than 24 hours, before the ceremony. The Chancellor, His Royal Eminence, Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbu El-Kanemi, Shehu of Borno congratulated all the graduands and charged them to make a difference having been properly groomed by some of the best brains in the country. He lauded the management, faculty, staff and students for sustaining quality learning and peace at the university. He expressed appreciation to the Governor of Borno State, Prof.Babagana Zulum, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Jim Ovia, ex-governor Kasim Shetima and other eminent personalities too numerous to mention for their presence at the convocation.
