Earlier today, Vice President Kamala Harris became the first female president of the United States -- albeit temporary -- after President Joe Biden handed over power to her before he was placed under anesthesia for his routine colonoscopy. According to the 25th Amendment, Biden officially transferred power by writing to inform House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

According to CNN, Harris's duration as the first female President of the US lasted 85 minutes of which time she was in charge of both the military and nuclear warheads. Biden however took over power after being declared medically fit by doctors at Walter Reed Medical Center. This is the second political record Harris is breaking in the political history of the US after emerging as the first black and South Asia woman Vice President when the Democrats won the Presidential election in November last year. However, this is not the first time US President is handing over temporary power to his deputy under medical grounds. In June 2002, then President George Bush handed over the power of the presidency to Vice President Dick Cheney while undergoing routine medical examination. It lasted for more than 30 minutes.

This is the second time in the history of the US a president is officially handing over power to his deputy for medical reasons.
